Bodhi Floaty overview

Bodhi Floaty is one of those dead-simple products that really don`t need a lot of digging into. It comes in a simple plastic mold case and you get the floaty itself and the screw. That`s it and that`s all you need.

Take the Bodhi Floaty out and slide in your GoPro and screw on the quick-release clip or attach your camera to wherever you want. The biggest great thing in my mind about the Bodhi Floaty is that you will have full access to the back LCD. With the floating backdoors, you are flying blind and need to rely on instinct to frame your shots and you will not be able to use the LCD to change settings or review your shots. The other beef I have with floating backdoors is that you need to switch the housing doors whenever you need to use the floaties. This is a major pain and clipping doors on and off is not something I want to spend my time on. If your hands are wet an sandy then switching the doors is especially bad because sand and dirt can get on the seal making the case not waterproof or moisture can get in the casing.

This is why the Bodhi Floaty is a great product. You don`t need to expose your gear to the elements and you have full access to the LCD. The Bodhy also has cutouts for the side button and the two mics so you will have excellent audio quality even with the Bodhy Floaty on.

One other great aspect I like is since the Bodhi Floaty covers your camera on all sides it acts like a protective case. You can drop your camera on hard surfaces and although GoPro can take a beating you will leave marks and tiny cracks if it would smash on rugged rocks or example. With the Bodhy covering the GoPro you can probably get away with really heavy impacts since the made of foam that absorbs the impact. So you will want to carry the Bodhi Floaty in your gear bag for cases when you need extra protection for your camera. I even used it on a dirtbike to protect the camera from rocks flying under other bikes tires- works like a charm.

The bright orange color is perfect since it helps you spot the camera in water really easy and that`s what you want.  To add to the security the Bodhi Floaty wraps around your camera and since you put the fork through an opening in the bottom of the floaty to screw it on to something it`s pretty impossible for the camera to slip out of the floaty. With floating backdoors, however, the adhesive can come loose on big impacts so I at least feel at ease when using the Bodhi Floaty while kitesurfing and the camera taking big hits all the time.

Now there is one tiny thing that kind of bothers me and that I think could be improved. Since the sides of the Bodhi Floaty are quite thick to give it the buoyancy it needs, you need to use an extra long screw, that is provided of course. If you have tens and tens of screws in your backpack all tossed together you will be going through them finding the one long one and if you forget it at home for some reason you can`t use the screws you have on other mounts. So I would add a bit of material to the top or front or wherever if needed to shave off some of the foam from the bottom to add more space to the screws.

One of those really simple but great products! A huge improvement from the usual floating back doors and it adds an extra layer of protection, so you will keep your camera safe from drowning AND from damages from hard surfaces. If you don`t want to lose your camera in the water this one is a definite addition to your gear.
